Meet Carlene

Workforce Challenge

In November 2009, as a result of corporate consolidation, Carlene, age 60, found herself unemployed after a 10+ year career in the travel industry. Having anticipated that she would have that career until retirement, her desire was to continue working but she was overwhelmed with finding suitable employment at her age.

Workforce Solution

Carlene met with a WIA Career Counselor at the Greater Raritan One Stop Training Office and decided that she wanted to "spruce up" her office management skills. She investigated several local schools and chose to attend the West Windsor Instutute of Technology in Lawrenceville based on its proximity to her home, course offerings and track record of supporting students who were returning to work after unemployment. She enrolled in the Microsoft Office certification class with the assistance of a WIA training grant.

Outcomes & Benefits

Within 3 months after her training, Carlene landed employment in a well-paying full time position in the travel field, where she was told that if it were not for her pursuing the additional training, she would have not been the successful candidate for the job. Congratulations, Carlene!
