Arkansas Workforce Center - Harrison

Green Forest Community Helpers

Workforce Challenge

As in many rural areas of the country Arkansas Workforce Center - Harrison is challenged to find suitable summer employment for our eligible youth. With funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), in 2010 we were able to serve a larger number of youth who all had special needs and no work experience: significant barriers that prevented them from finding employment on their own.

Workforce Solution

In the summer of 2010, a pilot program was put into place in the town of Green Forest. One component of this program served special needs youth. These youth were employed by the city and given the task of city beautification in Green Forest. A group of seven boys along with a paid supervisor painted at the city park and ball fields, landscaped at the city square and helped with a community garden for the needy in the area.

Outcomes & Benefits

The jobs created for the Green Forest youth provided them with valuable work experience and leadership skills. The projects provided the city and surrounding areas with activities for their children to participate in and helped to make the city a better place to live and raise a family.
