Arkansas Workforce Center - Harrison

Northwest Arkansas Summer Youth Program

Workforce Challenge

In Northwest Arkansas, many young people want to work in summer jobs, but in a rural community, opportunities were limited. Even those who sought employment through the Northwest Arkansas Certified Development Company Workforce Center were having difficulty obtaining placement through the WIA Summer Work Program. There were no job sites in this very small rural community.

Workforce Solution

To solve this problem and provide both a job site location and a positive summer work experience, the Workforce Center partnered with the National Park Service to provide workers for trail maintenance and historical site restoration at locations in the area. The Center provided the supervisors and transportation to the worksites, and the National Park Service provided the working locations. Over 20 youth in the area learned about our natural resources and how to preserve them.

Outcomes & Benefits

Aside from the fact that several thousands of dollars were put back into the local community in wages, several youth have now expressed an interest in obtaining further education to pursue a career in Parks and Recreation. This creative partnership helped youth perform service-related work that benefited their state and community, and they gained experience and work-related skills that they can carry forward.
