Workforce Challenge

Lucia was a 14 year old high school student with a 4 month old son when she applied for the Summer Youth Program in 2009. She had no work experience or skills to find a job on her own and her self esteem was very low.

Workforce Solution

Lucia worked at an insurance office in Green Forest for the summer of 2009. She speaks and understands Spanish and became a valuable worker for the office. She learned to answer the phones, accept payments and greet customers. In the summer of 2010 Lucia was asked to help with a community project working with children in a summer youth soccer camp. She proved to be a natural leader working with the children and she also took on a supervisory role with some of the other workers. She is an excellent student and plays on the Lady Tiger Soccer team. Working in our program has given her much-needed confidence.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lucia now works at a local thrift store and the manager Tracy says, “She catches on to everything so fast and is an asset to me and the store”. With a little love and support Lucia has matured and grown into a responsible young lady. She has made some decisions in her life that force her to live differently than most teenagers; however she continues to hold her head high and work toward a good life for her and her family. Some young people really touch your heart and she is one of them!
