Arkansas Workforce Center - Harrison

Green Forest Soccer Camp

Workforce Challenge

As in many rural areas of the country Arkansas Workforce Center - Harrison is challenged to find suitable summer employment for our eligible youth. With funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), in 2010 we were able to serve a larger number of youth from low income families who had no work experience and faced barriers that prevented them from finding employment on their own.

Workforce Solution

In the summer of 2010 a pilot program was put into place in the town of Green Forest. A summer soccer camp for boys and girls in grades pre-school through seventh grade was organized by community leaders and the Arkansas Workforce Center. Twelve summer youth workers provided the coaching and supervision to the participants. They taught good soccer techniques and also instilled in the participants the need to stay away from substance abuse. The staff also learned leadership and mentoring skills by working with their Employment Training Advisor. The camp was offered to the community at no charge, which allowed many low income and unemployed families to participate.

Outcomes & Benefits

The jobs created for the Green Forest youth provided them with valuable work experience and leadership skills. The projects provided the city and surrounding areas with activities for their children to participate in and helped to make the city a better place to live and raise a family.
