Workforce Challenge

Betty was a dislocated worker who never graduated from high school. She had spent her whole career working at local factories and believing she would never qualify for other kinds of work with the lack of a diploma or higher education. When she turned 50, Betty was laid off by one of the factories she had relied upon for income. With manufacturing positions dwindling, she was unable to find employment for nearly two years and didn't know where to turn for assistance.

Workforce Solution

Betty eventually visited the local JobLink Career Center and was introduced to Cynthia Watson. Cynthia is a WIA Case Manager who works closely with clients to find the right training and certifications to develop new career paths.

N.C. Governor Bev Perdue had also launched a new workforce development initiative called "12 in 6" which focuses on job creation and economic development. It created community college programs in 12 occupational areas, each of which could be completed in six months or less. Betty chose a field she felt would give her job stability upon completion of the program. She decided on the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training and earned her certification through the local community college. The program also assisted in expenses for tuition and books.

Outcomes & Benefits

Today Betty not only has her GED but has acquired full-time employment as a CNA in home health. Betty shared that she'd always wanted a position where she helped people but she did not want to have to go through a four year program. As a home health CNA, Betty feels really good at the end of the day, because she feels that she has been able to help someone make it through another day. She hopes her daughter will learn from her experiences and stay in school.
