Meet Margaret

Workforce Challenge

Margaret was employed as an Office Manager at a large manufacturing company in the Irvine area. Unfortunately the company downsized considerably and moved its manufacturing facility to Mexico, so she was laid off in the process.

Margaret's background was in social work, but she had not worked in this field in recent years, so she searched for another administrative position. Although she had various software skills, including Microsoft Office, they were self taught. Margaret was 55 and at the time of her layoff, the job market was very much depleted. Each position she applied for required advanced skills in Microsoft Office and QuickBooks or other accounting software. As she was receiving unemployment benefits, she was referred to the Westminster One Stop Center for assistance.

Workforce Solution

Prior to her referral, Margaret had never heard of a One Stop Center. She quickly realized the value of the services it offered and took advantage of them, spending more and more time at the center. However, it became apparent that she needed certificates in Microsoft Office and Quickbooks to become re-employed. With the help of her counselor, Margaret was enrolled in the WIA program, through which she received tuition assistance to attend online courses in both software applications while continuing her job search.

Outcomes & Benefits

Margaret was dedicated to her job search and often spent time at the One Stop Center using the resources there. As she became more and more familiar with its operations, she began to think about working there. She applied for an open position at the Center, was interviewed, and received an offer. Margaret now works at the Westminster One Stop Center and is able to promote the positives of the WIA program to other clients.
