Meet Theresa

Workforce Challenge

In February, 2009, Theresa was laid off in a company restructuring. She was in her 40's, had no degree, and was competing for jobs with much younger candidates who had attended college and held degrees. It seemed that every job for which she applied, a degree or formal training was required. All Theresa had was her experience as an Administrative Assistant.

Workforce Solution

When she came to the One Stop Center, Theresa was interested in obtaining training for a new job where she could combine her past job experience with her new skills. Her job counselor, Martha, performed interest assessments and evaluations to help identify the right career path. Theresa submitted a request to attend Concorde Career College to study Medical Insurance Coding and Billing and was approved for WIA funded tuition assistance.

This career would allow Theresa the option to work in several different settings within the medical field such as a doctor's office, hospital or even out of her home, and still use the skills she had developed as an administrative assistant.

After completing training, Theresa participated in a mock interview to build her interviewing skills and prepare to land the job she wanted. She took the feedback seriously and made the improvements suggested by her interviewers.

Outcomes & Benefits

"Less than two months after graduation I was offered a position as a Medical Administrative Assistant for a Psychiatrist. I love my job and look forward to going everyday. I am a firm believer in if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life and I can honestly say I love my job."

"I am grateful Martha believed in me and that this program gave me the opportunities to show my children the importance of a good education. Thank you One Stop, thank you WIA and thank you Martha."
