Smith Brothers Insurance, Inc.

Workforce Challenge

Smith Brothers is a privately owned insurance company in Glastonbury, CT that has been proudly serving its customers since 1971. To compete in today's economy, they need diverse, skilled and trained workers. Smith’s subsidiary, Auto Insurance Mart in East Hartford, had to quickly hire a receptionist/customer service representative with industry experience and bi-lingual Spanish/English skills. It’s expensive today to recruit and continually train effective staff, particularly for a small business, and there was little budget available to identify the right candidate for this role.

Workforce Solution

The Business Services Team at Capital Workforce Partners drafted a job description for the CT Job Bank and distributed the job description through a comprehensive distribution network which includes 21 Hispanic organizations. The hiring manager at Auto Insurance Mart obtained a large pool of properly qualified candidates, fast. She made the hire when she needed it most.
In addition, the Business Services Team supplied worker training funds (50% reimbursement) for several of Smith’s current employees.

Outcomes & Benefits

Cost-free recruiting assistance with the effective resources helped. The hiring manager was particularly gratified that she received more qualified applicants from the workforce board than from expensive advertising. Likewise, the worker training funds provided an opportunity to build the skills of their existing employees. As a result of the benefits they have received, Smith Brothers now helps articulate workforce issues facing local businesses and the Insurance and Financial Services sector as a valued partner of Capital Workforce.
