Meet De'Reed

Workforce Challenge

De'Reed, a high school student, had no work experience when he came to the Heart of Georgia Altamaha WIA's summer youth program. This program is available to those between the ages of 14-21 who are economically disadvantaged or basic skills deficient or face other significant challenges that will make it difficult to enter the workforce on their own.

Workforce Solution

Through the program, De'Reed was placed in a job at a local Subway restaurant, where he learned many things. "Something that I’ve learned while working at Subway is that a job can help you in many ways," he said. "If I can participate in the program next year, then I will because you learn different things everyday and you meet new people. If I had the chance to change something at my job, I would change the amount of hours I work each day to get extra money". De'Reed enjoyed the work experience and receiving a paycheck for the first time.

Outcomes & Benefits

"I think this was a meaningful experience because it helps you see what having a job feels like and it gets you ready for when you are out on your own," said De'Reed. "At Subway I didn’t have any problems. I liked working there. I liked it because I got along with everyone who worked there, and all of them liked me." De'Reed bought himself some new clothes and shoes with the money he earned. He also helped his mother buy his younger brothers and sisters some clothes and shoes for school.
