Workforce Challenge

Juan was laid off in 2009 when the circuit board manufacturing plant where he'd been working as a production operator closed its doors. Juan was a sixth grade graduate with very low English skills. He needed a family-sustaining job.

Workforce Solution

Juan started his participation at the HIRE Center by working on his GED but he also needed meaningful occupational training. Since occupational training is rarely provided in Spanish, this seemed out of the question for him until the HIRE Center bilingual team, working with the Trade Adjustment Act Program staff & local technical college, MATC, developed WIA-funded training in Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) machining that combined the learning of occupational English with the technical skill. He participated in more than 400 hours of training and even though he had an hour commute, he never missed a class.

Outcomes & Benefits

Juan has since been hired as a CNC machinist by a Racine, WI firm, close to his home. He is extremely happy to have found local employment and in an area he is skilled. He is a CNC Operator, the field for which he was trained despite his language limitations. The pay for this job in the Racine, Wisconsin area pay ranges from $12.15 to 16.95 per hour.
