Meet Mekail

Workforce Challenge

Mekail Gibson was 18, homeless and needed to find work when she walked into the Calcasieu Business & Career Solutions Center. She had no work experience, no high school diploma, and no money to even buy personal hygiene items. She literally had only the clothes on her back.

Workforce Solution

The staff at the Calcasieu Business & Career Solutions Center assessed Mekail's needs. The team found immediate and safe shelter for her for six weeks, which gave them time to work with Mekail on her options while she remained in a safe environment. Mekail agreed with the staff's recommendations to pursue placement in Job Corps. The staff went to great lengths to help Mekail: arranging to have the Job Corps representative meet her at the center since she didn't have transportation; providing her with a study guide and materials to prepare for required testing; working with parish school officials to obtain needed legal documents and school records; and even giving Mekail an alarm clock so she could arrive to scheduled meetings on time.

Outcomes & Benefits

On November 10, 2010, Mekail Gibson walked into the Calcasieu Business & Career Solutions Center with not much more than hope. On January 3, 2011, she embarked on a new life through the Job Corps program, where she will be able to address many of her needs, including employment, education and shelter. Her path from despair to promise was made possible through the leadership and caring of center staff, who made it their mission to prevent this young woman from becoming another sad statistic.
