Meet La-Keesha

Workforce Challenge

Six months ago, La-Keesha Mitchell was unemployed and receiving public cash assistance. She said, "It was the first time I had ever been on cash assistance, and I didn't like it." She is a single mother of two children, ages 5 and 10, and was determined to find employment to support her family. It was a difficult task since unemployment in her home town in Palm Beach County, Florida, was at 12 percent at that time.

Workforce Solution

She then entered the Welfare Transition Program (WTP) at the Workforce Alliance Career Center and said, "I took all the free courses they offered including resume writing, interviewing skills and how to do an on line job search. I also got one-on-one coaching." La-Keesha was a graduate of Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, a magnet school requiring high academic standards.

Outcomes & Benefits

While La-Keesha was engaged in the WTP program, dd's Discount Department store came to the Career Center to interview managerial candidates for a soon-to-open store. "I interviewed with them that day, and they hired me on the spot," said La-Keesha. She had gained a great deal of confidence from the classes she attended and the interview coaching she had received at Workforce Alliance. And she still bubbles over with confidence while carrying out her supervisory duties at dd's Discount.
