Meet Monte

Workforce Challenge

Monte came to the Oregon Workforce Alliance (COIC) as a 15-year old dropout in 2008 whose last full year of school he had actually completed was the 6th grade. He was very behind in credits, had no work history, already had a juvenile record, and frankly was not very motivated to complete anything that the educational system had offered him.

Workforce Solution

Monte was enrolled in COIC's Alternative Education center and was assigned a WIA youth Employment Counselor. Through the use of an individualized educational program (IEP) and with the constant tutoring and counseling available to him through the Workforce Investment Act youth program, Monte began making progress in his education and we began to see changes in his behavior and attitude. As he attained specific educational goals in the classroom we offered Monte the opportunity for a paid Work Experience in the community.

Outcomes & Benefits

Monte, with the support of his Employment Counselor, Guidance Counselor from the school district, and his family made the decision to pursue a GED rather than a High School diploma. For the first time, Monte set an achievable goal and made steady progress towards it. As promised, he also received two different work experience opportunities where he was able to obtain job skills and learn to work in a team. He received his GED in December 2010 and is currently looking for full time employment.
