Workforce Challenge

Kou Yang was a young single mother just finishing high school. She was concerned about her future and finding a job to support herself and her child.

Workforce Solution

Kou enrolled in the WIA Youth program and participated in the Culinary Arts Program. This unique program is a collaboration between Wisconsin State Fair Park, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board Youth programs. This partnership provides Milwaukee area youth with practical culinary skills that lead to career employment opportunities. Youth experience careers in the food service industry while encouraging them to further pursue their educational interests. The six-week training culminates with participants taking the national Restaurant Association's "ServSafe" certificate exam.

Outcomes & Benefits

Having completed the program, Kou is now self-sufficient and is working for a local hospital. She is performing well in her job and is looking to further her schooling to open up higher-paying job opportunities with more responsibility. Congratulations, Kou!
