Meet Jeffers

Workforce Challenge

A few years ago, the construction industry came to a virtual standstill in Palm Beach County. At that time, Jeffers Walker was a licensed construction contractor and most of his employment background was in this single declining industry. With the high unemployment rate and the scarcity of jobs at the time, Jeffers had occasional part time work but not enough income. Jeffers said, "At times, my wife and I were not eating so that our kids would have enough."

Workforce Solution

In the summer of 2010, Jeffers learned of the Florida Back To Work (FB2W) program from the Belle Glade office of Workforce Alliance. He immediately visited the Career Center and posted an application. His construction background provided ideal qualifications for a position in building maintenance being offered by the City of Pahokee and funded by the FB2W program until the end of September.

Outcomes & Benefits

While in his new job, Jeffers said in a letter to Workforce Alliance, "The City of Pahokee has been a good place for employment. Since I started working I have been able to provide for my family, pay my bills on time and not worry about my family going to bed hungry." Late in September 2010, just prior to the end of the FB2W program, the City of Pahokee offered to retain Jeffers as a permanent employee, offering stable employment to this father for the first time in four years.
