Meet Laura

Workforce Challenge

Laura dropped out of school in the 9th grade to help care for sick parents. She had a variety of jobs, including operating a large organic poultry farm. Laura had been busy trying to make a living and care for her family, but she decided she needed to go back to school, get a GED, and try to go on to college. Laura was very smart and now that the decision was made, she was anxious to get started.

Workforce Solution

Laura enrolled in Wiregrass Tech's Fast Track GED program, which is co-funded using WIA funds. This program helps highly motivated students obtain their GED in only 3 weeks. Laura also enrolled in the Customer Service Program and took a work readiness assessment test.

Outcomes & Benefits

Laura excelled in all she attempted. She earned a GED, a Work Ready Gold Certificate and a Customer Service Specialist Certificate from Wiregrass GA Technical College in Valdosta. She is now pursuing an Associates Degree in Business Administration Technology. Laura is the first in her family to graduate high school and go to college. She also received a statewide honor as the 2010 GED Diploma Recipient Outstanding Achievement Award winner, which was presented to her at the Georgia Adult Education Fall Conference on Nov 4, 2010. Great job, Laura!
