Workforce Challenge

Joy Hutchins, a single mother, was not able to find employment. Her employment history included entry level positions in several sectors, but there was limited opportunity to advance in her chosen career area of office administration.

Workforce Solution

Joy learned about the employment services offered by the WorkForce Central YouthWorks Program. She enrolled in the program and created an employment plan with her counselor that included strategies for getting into her chosen career field. WorkForce Central staff worked with the Business Connection team to find an employer that was committed to providing young adults with training opportunities and inroads into living wage employment. Joy interviewed at Continuant and was offered a paid internship as an administrative assistant. She knew that if she demonstrated a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn she would have the opportunity to interview for a regular-hire position.

Outcomes & Benefits

Joy excelled during her internship and interviewed for a full time position with Continuant. She was hired on as a full-time staff member with paid benefits for both her and her daughter. “This program placed me with a prestigious company that I may not otherwise have known about,” Joy said. “If a person is looking for something that can lead to promotions and health benefits it’s better to do the internship than to look for jobs alone." Congratulations, Joy!
