Workforce Challenge

Marine View Ventures (MVV) is the economic development arm of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. They run the Chinook Landing Marina on the Puget Sound, and also a number of gas station/convenience stores. When they recently acquired a new gas station, they needed to quickly hire around 10 people to run the store when it opened. MVV brainstormed hiring methods and investigated the cost of print ads in the News Tribune or online with Career Builder, but both were over their budget. Instead, they posted ‘help wanted’ signs at their existing stores and advertised on Craigslist. However, time was running short and they were not getting very many qualified people interested, so they decided to venture out.

Workforce Solution

By networking, Sarah McGinnis, a recruiter for the Puyallup Tribe, heard of the WorkForce Central Business Connection. She contacted them and discussed the need to hire up to 10 new employees, as the store was scheduled to open the next week.

Outcomes & Benefits

“The team was amazing. From the moment I walked in I had my own private office,” Sarah said. “They were there for whatever I needed.” The Business Connection held a hiring event the next Wednesday and interviewed 20 people, of which Sarah hired six to open the new convenience store. “I have since then shared your information with my colleagues and just highly recommend it,” Sarah said. “You have saved my tail and grey hair and so I appreciate the whole team and thank you again.”
