Meet Johnathon

Workforce Challenge

Johnathon grew up in a troubled family. As a teenager, he began staying out & getting into trouble. He became involved with gangs and spent time in prison twice.

Workforce Solution

When Johnathon came to Arizona Call-a-teen Youth Resources’ (ACYR's) GED class, he was honest about sharing his story. He studied hard and was a role model for other students. When the Arizona Association for Life Long Learning had a statewide contest Johnathon was encouraged to enter, writing an essay entitled “What Adult Education Means to Me." Johnathon's essay won, and he was honored at a ceremony. His growing self esteem would serve him well as it helped him overcome obstacles at home and disengage from gang involvement.

Outcomes & Benefits

Johnathon is currently working and has made his family proud by the changes in his attitude towards education. His mother attended the awards ceremony, in which he received a certificate as well as a large plaque that will always remind him of what can be done with the right attitude and help to achieve goals. His counselor shared: "If it were not for our ACYR GED class here at the Maricopa County Workforce West Valley Career Center and the help he received, I believe Johnathon would still be living his “old” life. Thanks to the West Valley Career Center for allowing us to conduct Youth GED classes here."
