Workforce Challenge

April Harley of Dillon, SC, wanted to be a nurse all of her life. She attempted college, but was not initially successful. When she was ready to try again, she was the single mother of a nine-month old son, earning approximately $6,000 per year, and living at home with her mom.

Workforce Solution

April learned about the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program and sought assistance with expenses in order to earn a diploma in Registered Nursing (RN) at Florence-Darlington Technical College, in Florence, SC. WIA offered limited financial assistance with tuition, childcare, transportation, and books. Perhaps the most important success factor that WIA offered April was the support of a career specialist that believed in her and her dream.

Outcomes & Benefits

Today, April can be found working as an RN at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, in Florence, SC. She earns over $28 per hour working third shift so that she can be at home with her son during the day. She now enjoys living independently with her son in a nice apartment. At work, April is positively impacting patients that are trying to get back on their feet after injuries or surgeries; at home, she's a living example to her son that he can be whatever he wants to be when he grows up! Congratulations, April!
