Meet Tawana

Workforce Challenge

Tawana Johnson grew up in the housing projects of Glynn County, Georgia. By 10th grade, she had dropped out of school and was on the streets, where book learning took a back seat to street smarts. Eventually, with her mother's prodding, Tawana passed her GED and continued on to earn her Nursing Assistant certification. But, she says, the thought of attending college was "farfetched". "No one in my family had ever gotten a college degree. And who was I to think I ever could? Still, I had a dream."

Workforce Solution

In 2007, Tawanna enrolled at College of Coastal Georgia for a 2-year Registered Nursing program, but she needed support services to complete her program. WIA provided assistance with tuition, text books, supplies and, Tawana says, "Please don't forget the childcare. There was no way I could attend class without dependable childcare."

Outcomes & Benefits

In May, 2009, Tawana graduated as a Registered Nurse. Following her graduation, Glynn County Public Health Department offered her a new position as a Public Health Nurse, which she accepted. Tawana's salary doubled from what she had been making and she loves the new position and the opportunity it provides to help her community. She still continues to dream. "Who knows what the future holds," she says. "One day I may even hold a Master's degree in nursing. I will never stop dreaming."
