Workforce Challenge

Dusty came to the WIA office out of complete financial desperation. A plumber by trade, he was laid off, had unsuccessfully looked for employment for months, and had completely exhausted his unemployment benefits. Dusty's wife also lost her job as a mortgage lender, and the couple was facing foreclosure on their home. During this period Dusty also became delinquent in his child support payments.

Workforce Solution

Dusty learned about a training opportunity for truck driving after coming to the Madison County Employment and Training Department. After taking a basic skills assessment test, Dusty was determined to be deficient in both reading and math and would not be eligible for truck driver training until he could score a higher grade. After attending a math workshop at the Southwestern Illinois workNet Center in Granite City and retaking the test, Dusty received a passing score. Two weeks later he began the truck driving program at Rend Lake Community College to obtain his Commercial Drivers License (CDL)

Outcomes & Benefits

Dusty successfully completed the training program and a few months later he was hired by Bechtel Construction Company, a subcontractor for Conoco Phillips. At last report Dusty was working 50 hours a week, driving construction workers through the refinery to their work stations and earning $28.50 per hour. He is now back on track and fully employed. Congratulations, Dusty!
