Meet Omayra

Workforce Challenge

Omayra Vega is not the average customer at a CTWorks Career Center… or is she? Omayra has a degree from Southern CT State University. When she graduated, she and her husband decided to move to Puerto Rico. There, she was able to find jobs in hospitality and construction, both of which were booming at the time. Then the bottom fell out of tourism. H er children were school age and she wanted the best education she could get for them, so she moved back to CT. She spent the next ten months looking for work.

Workforce Solution

With two children to support, and unable to find employment, Omayra was forced to go on TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). She was directed to the CTWorks Career Center in New Haven, where she worked with an Employment Specialist and a Job Developer. She got a lot of interviews, but no job. Her career center professionals kept her spirits up and arranged for every interview possible.

Outcomes & Benefits

Omayra’s contacts at CTWorks were very impressed with her, and noted how well-prepared she was for every interview. With their encouragement, she applied for a job as an employment specialist with HRA, the company that operates CTWorks. Omayra thinks the reason they liked her was that she had been there herself, on the other side of the desk. She really understood the resources and the customers’ needs. Omayra knows she would have eventually found work somewhere, but she is thrilled that this opportunity came along. Congratulations, Omayra!
