Save-A-Lot

Workforce Challenge

Save-A-Lot food stores are among the nation’s leading extreme-value grocery chains. They were recruiting for a new store in the Philadelphia region and needed to streamline its hiring processes.

Workforce Solution

PA Careerlink’s® Business Service Team, or BST, allowed David Bounds, the recruiting specialist for Save-A-Lot, to streamline his hiring process and “kill two birds with one stone.” The Philadelphia BST provides Save-A-Lot with on-site, informational recruiting sessions for potential employees. These sessions provide information to a critical mass of potential employees who learned about opportunities at Save-A-Lot through PA Careerlink’s® online database. Instead of sitting in his office make phone calls all day to track down information about resume submissions, David has the opportunity to begin the recruiting process in a more personal manner. On-site, informational recruiting also allows David to complete one-on-one interviews with candidates in the same day, giving him the chance to interact with the individual, as opposed to waiting until midway through the process to meet them face-to-face.

Outcomes & Benefits

Last year, Save-A-Lot hired around 60 employees for retail-management positions by utilizing the services provided by the Philadelphia BST, and around 150 went through the process of on-site interviews. After being involved with the BST for about a year and a half, David says the most successful aspect of being involved with the BST is the relationship he is able to have with the BST staff. “We work specifically with two Business Service Team members and we’ve developed a great professional relationship with them,” says David. Save-A-Lot plans to expand their professional relationship with the BST by integrating an open house into their self-marketing strategy. This will allow Save-A-Lot to advertise to the general public in banquet hall facilities, interview candidates on the spot, and complete callbacks and second interviews all in the same day.
