Meet Heidi

Workforce Challenge

In March 2009, Heidi lost her full-time job with no notice. Although she diligently applied for jobs, she was unable to find work. Heidi had been working as a “tobacco cessation specialist” for the past 10 years, helping people quit tobacco use. Unfortunately, there were not many opportunities for this line of work where she lived. With her unemployment benefits soon expiring and feeling hopeless about finding a job, Heidi needed help.

Workforce Solution

Heidi went to the Pierce County WorkSource Center to seek assistance where she learned of WorkForce Central’s Job Club, a support group for people who are unemployed. For the first time in 12 months she felt hopeful. As a result of networking, Heidi heard of an opportunity with the Auburn YMCA.

Outcomes & Benefits

Because of the support she received through Job Club, Heidi was successful in getting the YMCA job in May, 2010, running a tobacco cessation program.
“I’m 54 years old, and people need to understand no matter what age you are, you can change your life,” Heidi said. “The biggest lesson I learned was about not isolating myself. Coming to Job Club helped me feel normal again.”
