Meet Karrie

Workforce Challenge

Karrie McKechnie was a secretary for a healthcare provider, trying to support her family on about $12 an hour, as her husband had recently been laid off from his job. Having a mortgage and three children, she was having a very hard time with finances. She and her husband had no health insurance. She often had to work overtime to be able to cover their bills.

Workforce Solution

Although her employer had a tuition assistance program, Karrie knew there was no way she could cover the cost of tuition upfront, as the program required. She also knew she would not be able to cover books and other school costs. She then heard about the Career Coaching Program at work. This program is partnership between healthcare providers and Workforce Central that provides current employees with training assistance into high-demand occupations. Karrie applied and was accepted into the program.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through the Career Coaching Program, Karrie was able to enroll and graduate from Highline Community College’s Polysomnographer Tech program, and she is now making $25 an hour. “[The Career Coaching Program] has not only enabled me to provide for my family, it has given me the confidence that I am able to achieve a goal,” Karrie said. “I think this program is key to the economy - providing people with the tools it takes to make it on their own without public assistance.”
