Meet John

Workforce Challenge

John was 32 years old when his employer of 10 years shut its doors and moved overseas. John had a GED and no transferable skills to assist him in obtaining another job. He had a wife and two small children as well as a mortgage to pay. He knew he needed an education/training in order to raise himself out of this situation; however, there was no way he could afford the cost of tuition and books.

Workforce Solution

John enrolled in WIA and began classes at Gwinnett Technical College in Machine Tool Technology. WIA paid for his tuition, books, and the tools needed to finish his program.

Outcomes & Benefits

Within two weeks of finishing his program at Gwinnett Tech, John was able to secure a job. Because of his training, John was making $6.50 per hour more than his previous employment.

Since then, John has been laid off two additional times. But because of the training he received through WIA, he has always been able to reenter the workforce quickly. John says he has no idea what kind of situation his family would be in today if it wasn't for WIA helping him when he was in need.
