Meet Gabe

Workforce Challenge

Gabe is a rural youth who was registered in Workforce Investment Act funded program while in high school. He is 19 years old, homeless and has no family in the immediate area. Gabe is struggling to graduate from high school and needs assistance with improving his academic skills, deciding what career pathway he wants to follow and his ongoing housing and transportation issues. This program is his only option for obtaining the assistance he needs to graduate and make it to the next step.

Workforce Solution

Upon entry into the youth program, Gabe and his career advisor put together a plan that included his occupational goal of employment with the U.S. Forest Service. He also set a goal to improve his math skills and is receiving comprehensive tutoring assistance.

Outcomes & Benefits

Due to the assistance he received from this program, Gabe is on target to graduate in June 2011, has completed his application for financial aid and applied at two community colleges for postsecondary training programs. He recently interviewed with the Forest Service and is waiting to hear if he will be hired to work on their summer fire crew this year. The future is looking much brighter for him.
