Meet Mimi

Workforce Challenge

Mimi was referred to the DeKalb Workforce Development (DWD) office by the Division of Family and Children Services. She did not want to go into the GED program, because she only needed to pass the science part of the test in order to graduate high school, but she had had trouble passing this part of the test in the past.

Workforce Solution

The staff at DWD assisted Mimi with finding one on one tutoring. After three months she was ready to go back to Towers High School and take the science portion of the exam, which she passed. With her GED in hand, Mimi received a work placement with Dekalb County. Dekalb Workforce assisted with helping Mimi obtain a few items of professional clothing to wear to work. After 6 months, Mimi's work placement was converted to regular employment.

Outcomes & Benefits

Mimi is now back in school attending Georgia Perimeter College. Even though she is no longer in the youth program at Workforce Development, she still comes for help from her counselor there. She now has a place to live and her own car. "If it wasn’t for this opportunity, I would not be where I am today," said Mimi. "I am so grateful for the people at Dekalb Workforce and I would definitely recommend this place."
