Meet Travis

Workforce Challenge

Travis was referred to us by his school district's Transition Coordinator in his Senior year. Travis has a disability and he struggled in his academic studies, but he showed strengths in his work ethics and willingness to do well. Travis was "disinterested" in some areas of his academics, and he had been earning an unsatisfactory grade in social studies, which would exclude him from meeting the requirements for graduation.

Workforce Solution

By satisfactorily completing the Tri-County WIB's in-school youth work program, Travis would fulfill this social studies component of the academic curriculum, therefore meeting his graduation requirements. He was enrolled in the program right away.

Travis worked every afternoon of his school day in the youth program, and received excellent evaluations and had perfect attendance. His case manager had met with him prior to his work placement to discuss his academic and work background, career goals and interests. Travis had no real past work experience, but had an interest in working in mechanics and with heavy equipment. After his internship, his case manager coordinated an On-the-Job Training with Appalachian Well Services, an employer in our gas and oil industry cluster.

Outcomes & Benefits

Travis fulfilled has graduation requirements, successfully completed his O.J.T., and was retained on by the O.J.T. employer in full-time employment. He has been with the company since March 2010. Travis feels that his participation in the youth programs has greatly benefited him, and is the reason for him being in his career today. Travis continues to work hard in his position with the company, and has gained more responsibilities in his job duties. Congratulations, Travis!
