Meet Heather

Workforce Challenge

Heather, a single mother, needed to earn money and gain work experience. Through the South Dakota Department of Labor's Work Experience program, she was placed with the Gurney Redevelopment Groups as an Office Assistant/Sales Representative/Laborer.

Workforce Solution

As indicated by the job title, Heather was going to have a series of duties, progressively more difficult as she learned the job. She started out by cleaning and doing some painting; however, renovation on the new rental space was slow, and Heather was quick to pick up her job duties so she was moved to assisting with cataloging plaster molds. Cataloging consisted of taking pictures, measuring, weighing, and storing by size so the molds could then be placed for auction on Ebay. It wasn’t long before another new task was added: cold calling customers from across the country in an effort to sell the company's products. Heather was very nervous and timid about this at first, but it did not take her long to become fluent and even challenge herself. The supervisor initially gave Heather a goal of four sales per day, but Heather soon increased her own goal to 10.

Outcomes & Benefits

Heather said, “I really like the job because I am doing so many different things.” Both the work site and participant were extremely satisfied with the program and the assistance received from the SD Department of Labor. In fact, Heather was offered a job with Gurney Redevelopment Groups after the end of the work experience. She will continue to work full time. Congratulations, Heather!
