Meet Sal

Workforce Challenge

As a 46-year-old man that has been welding for 20 years, Sal lost his job and was contacted by our staff about training opportunities. He was extremely apprehensive about going to school again, since no one in Sal’s family had ever attended college.

Workforce Solution

With encouragement from the workforce staff, Sal attended a 6-month training in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funded welding program at Clackamas Community College. Once Sal finally took the plunge, he recognized that there were more efficient ways to do some of the things he'd been doing for years.

Outcomes & Benefits

After receiving his certificate, Sal was hired by Universal Recycling Technology as a welder and maintenance mechanic. He now feels like he is a better welder and a better employee. Sal also has attended classes in composite tech windblade repair, a curriculum funded through the WIRED grant.

Sal is always eager to gain more knowledge and make himself more marketable in the workplace. What really strikes those who meet Sal is his passion and his gratitude for the opportunities he has received through the Workforce Investment Act.
