Meet Tony

Workforce Challenge

In January, 2010, Tony Simmons lost his job as a Senior Structural Mechanic when his company closed as a result of the economic downturn. After months of filling out job applications, he could repeat the lines by heart: “We cannot hire you without an A & P license.” “We are not currently hiring individuals without an A & P license.” “We’d love to hire you, but you have no A & P license.” A & P stands for "Airframe and Powerplant".

Workforce Solution

In August, Simmons was approved for funding to attend a one-week A & P Licensing class in Atlanta. The Workforce Investment Act covered the entire cost of his training, as well as his travel expenses for the week he spent in Atlanta. It also reimbursed him for the entire cost of his licensing exam, which he passed with flying colors. Once he finished his training, WIA Career Advisors were there to follow up with him each month and offer assistance with his job search.

Outcomes & Benefits

Following his training and certification, Mr. Simmons spent four months doing contract work for local employers, while pursuing employment with a company he had worked for in the past, L3 Communications. On February 15, he achieved his goal and accepted employment as an Airframe Repair Mechanic. He starts work in Kuwait on March 2, 2011.
