Workforce Challenge

Wilmeika enrolled into the WIA Youth Program on 4/1/2009 seeking career guidance, occupational skills training, and job search assistance. When Wilmeika enrolled she had customer service experience and worked part-time as a Cashier at Circle K Convenience store making a little over minimum wage. Though she was employed she sought to gain skills that would help her obtain a sustainable career in the growing healthcare field as a Patient Care Technician.

Workforce Solution

Wilmeika began training in May 2009, successfully completing a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, Medical Terminology, and Phlebotomy at Midlands Technical College. While attending training Wilmeika became pregnant and obtaining a career was more important than ever so we began job searching and she applied for employment at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Outcomes & Benefits

Wilmeika began working in February, 2010 as a Patient Care Technician I at Richland Memorial Hospital. Recently Wilmeika received a promotion as Patient Care Technician III making $10.13 an hour. With the help of the WIA Youth Program, we assisted Wilmeika with occupational skills training, job search assistance, and now she has obtained stable employment that has jump started her career.
