Meet Sharon

Workforce Challenge

By June, 2010, Sharon Cook had been unemployed nearly 18 months and had just learned she had three weeks left on unemployment. She had worked as a property manager but knew that the field was declining and she needed to develop some new skills. She had cared for her ailing mother and found she enjoyed the work, but could not get hired without a certification in the medical field.

Workforce Solution

With her benefits about to expire, Sharon opted to attend a six-week course to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The Workforce Investment Act paid the entire cost of her tuition, books, and required uniforms and equipment. Following her training, WIA also covered the cost of her certification exam.

Outcomes & Benefits

Sharon passed her certification exams and is now employed at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation in Savannah, Georgia. When asked about the WIA program, all she could say was "Thank you." The tears running down her cheeks said the rest.
