Meet James

Workforce Challenge

James McGriff came into the Workforce Investment Act Program (WIA) on May, 2009 after being laid off from an electronics equipment manufacturer. McGriff had worked in the manufacturing field for over 30 years and wanted to make a switch into the health care industry. He wanted to be able to help others and change lives.

Workforce Solution

When he came into WIA he expressed his interest in the Patient Care Technician program at Midlands Technical College. With the help of the WIA program funds McGriff enrolled in the Phlebotomy and EKG courses. He received transportation assistance for the duration of his training to ensure that he could get to and from school daily. His books, uniforms, supplies, and other supportive services were all provided for him thru WIA.

During the time that he was in training, he worked directly with his WIA case manager on updating his resume, gaining new interview skills, and familiarizing himself with companies that could hire him upon completion of the course.

Outcomes & Benefits

With the new occupational skills certifications and a clean SLED (drug screening), McGriff and his WIA case manager began job searching. In January, 2011, James McGriff gained full time employment with Lexington Medical Center as an EKG Technician. He is very grateful for all the support that he received from the WIA Program and his case manager.
