Meet Mike

Workforce Challenge

In June, 2010, Mike Kemp received an honorable discharge from the National Guard and found himself in the civilian workforce, with a wife and four children to care for. While he had skills driving military vehicles and construction equipment, he needed to get his CDL license to begin working as a Commercial Truck Driver.

Workforce Solution

Because of his previous skills and training, Mike was able to attend a three-week training course in Commercial Truck Driving. Funds from the Workforce Investment Act paid for the cost of his tuition. WIA also paid the cost of his transportation to the school, which was out of town, and reimbursed him for his hotel and meal costs while he was in training.

Outcomes & Benefits

On his last day in training, Mike passed his CDL Driving test with flying colors and was immediately hired by Werner Trucking to drive over the road, full time. He is still driving and is glad to be able to provide for his family.
