Meet Patrisha

Workforce Challenge

In July, 2010, Patrisha Williams had lost her job in personnel management and aspired to become a Police Officer. She had completed her Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, but no one could hire her without certification through a Police Officer Training Academy. Because she had already completed a degree, she was not eligible to receive federal grant money through the Pell grant to help pay for her training.

Workforce Solution

Through Workforce Investment Act funds, Patrisha entered training at the GPSTC (Georgia Public Safety Training Center) Police Academy at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. WIA covered the cost of her training and reimbursed her for the cost of uniforms she was required to purchase for her program.

Outcomes & Benefits

Following her training, with only a few local jobs posted in her field, Patrisha began work as an Officer-in-Training with the Garden City Police Department in January, 2011. She states that she loves the new job and is thankful for the funding that helped her train for it.
