Workforce Challenge

"Matt"* was a young man working as an electrician's apprentice. When his employer accepted a contract that required union membership, and did not allow apprenticeships, he was no longer employable, and was laid off. Although the layoff was hard, it gave Matt a chance to consider other careers for which he might be more suited.

Workforce Solution

In September, 2010, Matt came into the Vernal, Utah Department of Workforce Services office and inquired about jobs or training. Because of the nature of his layoff, he was qualified to receive WIA dislocated worker funding for training into a new career. Matt had an interest in commercial driving, and decided to pursue a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) through an approved training provider that accepted WIA funds.

Outcomes & Benefits

Matt enrolled in classes and completed his CDL training the first week of January 2011. The following week, he obtained a job earning $18.76 per hour as a driver. He now has employment with a secure and established employer, and a bright future ahead of him.
