Meet Matthew

Workforce Challenge

In April, 2010, Matthew Stafford was a student in the CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) Certification and Drafting Diploma program at Savannah Technical College in Savannah, Georgia. He was about to graduate and knew that he would have difficulty finding work in his field without any experience.

Workforce Solution

Matthew participated in a WIA-funded internship program in correlation with his school that allowed him to work with Gulfstream Aerospace and gain experience in his field. Through the course of his training, Matthew also received a stipend to help cover the fuel costs and other expenses of attending the program, which he would not have been able to pay without taking another job that might interfere with his internship.

Outcomes & Benefits

Following his graduation from school and completion of his internship, Matthew was hired by Gulfstream to work in their Advanced Aircraft Programs department. He writes, "Before this internship, I was unclear as to where my future was taking me. Now I am in a career that I love and I believe the WIA program had a direct correlation to bettering my opportunities for employment."
