An Open Door

Workforce Challenge

In October of 2010, Calandra Phillips was downsized when her employer, a commercial chemical processor, closed its doors. She had all the tools and experience she needed to find new employment, but she knew that she needed to be certified as a project manager to find a new job.

Workforce Solution

In conjunction with her WIA Career Advisor, Ms. Phillips determined that she needed to obtain a Project Management Certification from Georgia Southern University. WIA funds covered her tuition at Georgia Southern and also paid for her certification exam when she completed training.

Outcomes & Benefits

Following her certification, Ms. Phillips began work for Mitsubishi Power Systems America, not only as a Quality Engineer, but also as Project Manager for several key projects that were scheduled for the site. Ms. Phillips states, "Without WIA, I would not have obtained my current job and would have missed out on a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am very grateful for this program and the door that it opened for me."
