Meet Marlo

Workforce Challenge

Marlo was a happy and content employee at a plant in Chickasha, Oklahoma, when the bottom seemed to drop out of her life. She had just completed 14 years of work with the same company when an announcement was made that the plant was closing. As a single mother with a high school student, she was going to have to find a new job and a new career to meet her family's needs.

Workforce Solution

Marlo attended a Rapid Response briefing and decided to follow up on the information presented. She visited the Chickasha Workforce Center where she was provided with the opportunity to participate in assessments to learn more about her skills, talents and interests. She worked with a case manager who helped her develop a plan to pull herself back up and get back to providing a meaningful life for her and her family. Using WIA funding, she began training as a Surgical Technologist and was a model student. With hard work and dedication, and the support and encouragement of WIA staff, she completed a two-year program in 18 months.

Outcomes & Benefits

One month into the clinical portion of her training program, Marlo accepted a position in the Surgical Technology Department of the McBride Cline Bone and Joint Center where her earnings allow her to live the "American Dream." Three years later, Marlo is still working in her new career with the same employer. Marlo says, "WIA changed my life! Thank you Workforce Investment Act; thank you Chickasha Workforce Center; and most of all, thank God."
