Meet Gloria

Workforce Challenge

Soon after graduation from Lancaster High School in 1972, Gloria McNeal began her career at the Springs Grace Plant in Lancaster, SC. This was the job that she thought would take her to retirement. After 32 years on the job there, she was laid off in 2006.

Workforce Solution

Soon after Ms. McNeal was laid off she heard about the WIA program. Through the services WIA offered, Ms. McNeal was able to go back to school and be retrained. In 2008 she received an Associate Degree in Business from the University of South Carolina-Lancaster. Her relationship with WIA didn't end there. In August 2010, after having worked several jobs for short periods of time and being laid off again, she met Jonah Gilyard, one of the On The Job (OJT) Coordinators for the Catawba Workforce Area in South Carolina. Jonah and Gloria worked together to come up with a game plan.

Outcomes & Benefits

Gloria is now employed with the Lancaster, South Carolina Police Department as a 911 Communications Officer. Her pay has gone up over 25% from her previous job. Gloria says, "If it had not been for the WIA program, I would not have been able to finish my degree program as soon as I did. The WIA/OJT Program helped me to get a better job with good benefits."
