A Star Student

Workforce Challenge

Nick Belmonte enrolled in the “Students in Business Training” youth program at Rochelle HS in the summer of 2005. When he started the program, he had no work experience and was unsure of his career interests. He thought he would attend a trade school and work as a mechanic upon high school graduation. During his first few weeks in the program, he completed a career interest inventory and discovered that he might do well in a career that involved working with people.

Workforce Solution

Nick did well in the classroom at Rochelle High School, making the honor roll several times. This was an impressive accomplishment considering that Nick was born in Mexico and came to the United States at age 5 not knowing how to speak English. Sue Sawicki, Nick’s tutor in the “Students in Business Training” program, met with Nick on a weekly basis during the school year to help him stay focused on his academic pursuits. Nick also did very well in the summer work experience portion of the “Students in Business Training” program. His attendance was excellent, as was his work ethic. It was often reported by his worksite supervisors that Nick was a great worker who was self-motivated and able to work independently.

Outcomes & Benefits

Nick graduated from Rochelle HS in May 2009 in the top 40% of his class. His success in cross country and track earned him an athletic scholarship to attend Sauk Valley C.C. in Dixon, IL where he is taking general education classes before declaring a major. Nick has been a superior participant in all facets of the “Students in Business Training” program and has benefited greatly from his involvement. He is a true success story with a bright future in any career that he chooses to pursue.
