Workforce Challenge

In the summer of 2009, North West Company came to Pierce County looking for a new location to consolidate multiple warehouses. They found a location they liked at the Port of Tacoma and signed a contract with the goal of being open, running and shipping freight by December 14. In order to meet their goal they needed to hire 30 new staff; however they did not have the necessary resources, having no HR personnel at the new location and no space in which to conduct interviews.

Workforce Solution

Knowing they had a very short time line in which to obtain the necessary staff to become operable, Randy Hinton, Director of Transportation and Logistics at North West Co., contacted the Port of Tacoma, who suggested getting in touch with Susan Seuss from the Economic Development Board. Susan, in turn, knew the WorkForce Central Business Connection would be the right fit for Randy and North West Co., and prompted the Business Connection to contact Randy and see how they could help.

Outcomes & Benefits

The North West Company gave the WCBC job descriptions for the positions they wanted to fill. Hiring was expedited when WCBC advertised, collected resumes, screened applications, and conducted preliminary phone interviews to identify the strongest candidates. "They set up all of the appointments for bringing them in for us to do the final interviews. We were able to hire 27 staff. We opened the warehouse by the 14th of December and we shipped our first container out,” Randy said.
