Workforce Challenge

Debra's successful 26-year career at a tobacco products company ended when the plant closed in 2006. At the time of the closure, Debra was earning more than $30.00 an hour. Debra's needed to replace her income, but she wanted a new career where she could have a sense of giving something back to the community and being able to make a difference.

Workforce Solution

Debra was referred to the Middle Georgia Consortium by a Department of Labor representative. There, she was approved to receive funding for re-training into a new career as a science teacher. "Without the Consortium providing monetary assistance with books, tuition and supplies, funding my research project in Maine, and providing continuous positive feedback and counseling," Debra said, I know that I would not have had the confidence, strength and fortitude to see this dream come to fruition."

Outcomes & Benefits

Debra pursued a Master's of Science degree in Molecular Biology with the Middle Georgia Consortium's assistance. Debra successfully completed the program and produced a thesis "Aquaporin 3 Water and Small Solute Channel Gene Expression in the Dogfish Shark (Squalus Acanthias)". Debra earned her Master's degree in Science from Georgia Southern University in 2008. Presently, she is teaching Biology at Georgia Military College and at Middle Georgia Technical College.
