Chickasha High School

Workforce Challenge

At Chickasha High School, about 68% of graduating seniors plan on attending college. For those who aren’t college bound, Chickasha High School wanted to provide them with the credentials needed for a successful career and life. A diploma isn’t always an adequate credential, so the school looked for alternative ways to identify the talent within their student body and help them improve their future employment opportunities.

Workforce Solution

In 2006, Oklahoma launched its Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) program, a job skills assessment system that measures real-world, on-the-job skills that employers nationwide view as critical to successful performance. Chickasha HS worked with the Southeast Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board to implement the WIA Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) program. It now requires its seniors to use the CRC program assessment called WorkKeys. Oklahoma’s State Board of Education approved the WorkKeys assessment as an alternative end-of-instruction test in applied math and reading. All seniors at 34 Oklahoma high schools are now taking WorkKeys assessments. Thirty-three of those schools are using the KeyTrain curriculum to prepare students for their end-of-instruction tests.

Outcomes & Benefits

Students at Chickasha use the CRC assessment to improve their weaknesses before graduation. Graduates have a portable credential, in addition to their high school diplomas, that help them get jobs in line with their skill levels.

“We are working to provide the best education for all students,” says Beth Edwards, Chickasha H.S. Principal. “Whether a student attends college or not, Career Readiness allows students to self-evaluate their employability and a chance to work on their weaknesses.”
