Workforce Challenge

Located in Erick, OK, WestOak Industries manufactures printed circuit boards for industrial applications, including the transportation, food, and oil and gas industries. Production focuses on circuit board hole assembly, surface mount area manufacturing, testing, inventory, inspection, and engineering. In this highly specialized industry, WestOak needed to reduce staff turnover and training time, reduce production errors, and increase manufacturing efficiency.

Workforce Solution

In 2006, the Governor’s Council for Workforce and Economic Development (GCWED) launched Oklahoma’s Career Readiness Certificate program, a job skills assessment system that measures real-world, on-the-job skills that employers nationwide view as critical to successful performance. When WestOak joined the WIA CRC program, it was provided with a uniform, cost-effective and easily accessible format for hiring entry-level skilled positions. WestOak used the CRC assessment tool to hire individuals with relevant skill sets for the industry. The company also used CRC to test incumbent employees to determine if they were performing at capacity, needed additional training, or if they were ready to move up the career ladder.

Outcomes & Benefits

WestOak reduced staff turnover and lowered training costs for new employees. It also improved its efficiency and accuracy in training and promoting incumbent employees. Other outcomes of the use of CRC included establishing a legal defensibility in the selection process, a reduction of production errors, and assistance in adhering to ISO 9000 standards.

“Career Readiness has bridged the gap between our organization and a qualified workforce,” says J.W. Rossen, WestOak President/CEO. “It benefits everyone involved with in the hiring process."
