Meet Emmanuel

Workforce Challenge

Emmanuel came to Community Services Consortium in 2006 as an 18-year-old who was homeless and living at the Community Outreach Shelter. He was facing many challenges including unemployment and lack of education. Emmanuel had only completed the 10th grade in school and he tested at 5th and 6th grade levels in math and reading. Additional difficulties he faced were the lack of any solid work history or vocational skills and he had no transportation.

Workforce Solution

Working with the WIA service provider staff, Emmanuel began a journey toward stability. He began studying for his GED and working on his life skills. Emmanuel came faithfully to the program office and over time he was able to receive intensive services that included leadership development, case management, summer employment, career guidance and counseling.

Outcomes & Benefits

With the help of the WIA youth staff Emmanuel was able to complete the work necessary to earn his GED. Then in January 2009, Emmanuel enrolled and began his first term of college. Emmanuel is still successfully attending school at LBCC, is living on his own, and has also obtained employment through a work study program.
